Honey Bee Good!

If you look out toward the river in the northeast corner of the Des Plaines Methodist Campground, you’ll see a growing enclave of the ever-industrious honeybees. Underneath the large maple the 5 individual hives cast their own unique form against the skyline.

Inside each hive, the tower of boxes that are formed have one queen, and each its unique idiosyncrasies. If you look at the Methodist Campground’s bees, you will see they are varying levels of individual boxes stacked on one-another.

At this point of the season we are managing the hives’ honey production, and even though we introduced these hives a little later in the season, the results and production of the hives have been well above average!

With the prevalence of clover and the nourishing waters of the Des Plaines river, the colonies have been pumping with honey production. And next week, we will see just how prolific they have been, when we take our first honey harvest!"
