Good for You. Good for the Planet

Our partner, The HIVE maintains bee hives on our site, working together to increase the number of pollinators and help increase our declining bee population. Pollinators help plants survive and produce tasty honey.

There's work involved in maintaining bee hives, and Master Beekeeper John Hansen showed our 4H Team how to extract honey. The steps include:

  1. One by one, remove each frame of capped honey from the hive.

  2. Use your electric uncapping knife to remove the wax cappings and expose the cells of honey

  3. When the frame is uncapped, place it vertically in your extractor.

  4. Turn the extractor crank to release the honey from the frames

  5. Use the valve in the bottling bucket to fill the jars you’ve designed for your honey.

  6. And last but not least - ENJOY!
