Wisdom of the Elders
Family Services Director, Tony Hollenback, Village of Niles, fosters community peace and healing in partnership with World Peace Leaders, and Indigenous GrandMothers Flora DeMayo, Mary Lyons, and, Doreen Bennett.
The Grandmothers weaved their unique wisdom together at a time when it is needed most. They met with seniors in the Low Vision group (in the Niles Senior Center), joining the Women’s Healing Group (in Niles Family Services) and a Peace Circle (in the Niles Teen Center). They also visited Gemini Middle School, the Niles Public Library and visiting youth in the Expanded Learning program in School District 63 and the grandparents raising their grandchildren as part of the North Shore Senior Center program.
Their week-long visit concluded on May 18th with a traditional peace fire ceremony hosted by The Historic Methodist Campground of Des Plaines attended by over 100 community members.
